from the ancient Greek gnōmōn
1. one who knows, an interpreter
2. the piece of a sundial that casts the shadow
3. emails that help you make sense out of the chaos
A gnomon is the little fixed piece on a sundial, the part that casts the shadow. It stays put while everything else moves. That's the whole trick: hold one thing perfectly still, and the movement around it turns into information.
You can read the time right off it. Or mark where the shadow lands, wait half an hour, mark it again, and the line between those two points gives you east and west; square that off and there's true north. A stick in the dirt, pointing you home.
That's what I want these to be for you. A fixed point. Something that holds still long enough that the stuff moving around your life and your work starts to make sense.
Once you see it, you see it everywhere. A fixed reference that turns motion into meaning reaches well past the sundial; it's the quiet thing that make most disciplines useful. The Gnomon lives where all elements overlap; at the fixed point in the middle.
4 fields, one principle. That overlap (the still point that makes a chaotic world legible) is what The Gnomon is for.
